The time the doctor thought I was mentally handicapped

It's story time peeps!

I was on the verge of adulthood at 17 years and 11 months. And after just graduating high school a few weeks before, I was excited to leave for New York City the next morning. It was going to be great! Just a full week hanging out with my mom in the city.

A few days before, I was cleaning my room and put a glass bottle on my floor (not sure why there was a bottle in my room, but there was. I'm sure there was a good reason at the time) and I guess I never put it back on the shelf. Well the night before we were supposed to leave, I was in my room packing and I was looking for my temple recommend. I couldn't find it anywhere! And that's when I stepped on the glass bottle! (I bet you saw that one coming.) It hurt and started bleeding really bad. So I rushed into my bathroom and tried to get it to stop bleeding. I called upstairs for my mom and asked her to come downstairs. Being the nurse she is, she wanted to see my foot. So she looked and decided I would need stitches. That piece of news just sent me over the edge. I started freaking out! Needles and I do not have a very good relationship and I am absolutely terrified of them!

Five minutes later, my foot was wrapped in a towel and I was in the car with my parents headed to the emergency room. I don't remember much about the ride over or what happened in the ER. But I do remember not wanting anyone to look at my foot. I was taken into a room to wait for the doctor. He finally came in and I kind of feel bad for him. I one hundred per cent acknowledge the fact that I am a difficult patient and I'm sure I didn't make his job any easier. When he asked if he could take the towel off my foot so he could look at the cut, I cried even harder. I was so scared! I kept saying "No. No. No. Take me home. No. No. Take me home. No. No. No. Take me home. No." I'm sure I sounded like a broken record and that was all I said the whole time at the ER. The doctor confirmed I would need stitches and asked to talk to my mom out in in the hall and I later learned that the following conversation took place.

Doc: So is there anything we should be aware of before we start?

Mom: No, I don't think so.

Doc: Are you sure?

Mom: Yes. Let's just get through this. I know she is not going to like this.

Doc: I just need to ask, does she have any learning disabilities?

Mom: *caught off guard* Umm... No. Why?

Doc: Well, I just wanted to check because we approach those patients differently.

Mom: She is definitely not mentally challenged. She is a straight-A student. She is just really scared.

They came back in and the doctor put 10 stitches in my foot!

When we got home, all I could think about was how my perfect vacation was ruined! How was I supposed to walk all over NYC now? I had stitches in my foot! I finally calmed down enough to sleep and we still left the next morning.

My nurse-mom was worried about my foot getting infected from walking through the dirty streets of New York. (I also learned later that the doctor was worried about infection as well so my mom was prepared with a prescription for something we could get filled in New York if we needed it.) I spent the week with my foot wrapped like this:

*Side note: See those cute sandals at the top of the picture? Those were the sandals I bought right before this trip, but because of the wrap on my foot, they didn't fit.

We tried to make the best of the situation and found benches specifically for me.

Nearly two years later, I am left with an ugly scar.

Wednesday's Words 1

Welcome to the very first edition of Wednesday's Words!

Every week I will pick a topic or idea and post relevant quotes. My main goal with this is to provoke thought and provide motivation for myself and my readers.

Why Wednesdays? Sometimes we all just need a little pick-me-up to finish out the week. Something to spur our minds forward and wake us up from the monotony of life. And maybe, perhaps bring a smile to your face because you can relate.

(If you ever have any suggestions of something you would like to see on Wednesday's Words just leave it in a comment.)

Today's topic: Friendship

"It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Never shall I forget the days I spent with you. Continue to be my friend, as you will always find me yours."
- Ludwig van Beethoven

wednesday the fifteenth of june

I applied for a new job!  This one is at a bridal store and I think I would really enjoy working there.  I haven't heard anything yet, but hopefully I will! :)

So this past weekend, I went to visit my wonderful family in Layton.  On Saturday, we went to a family reunion in Newton; a teeny, tiny town  next to the Idaho border.  We were late getting there and when we walked in, a lady was talking about wanting to get a picture before everyone started leaving.  Leaving?? We had just got there!  So we tried to talk to people a bit, but it was relatives I didn't know.  Besides my family, I think I knew 3 or 4 other people.  Eventually, we left and made the hour and a half drive back home.  Later, we had a movie night and watched I Am Number Four and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.  The number four movie was really good!  Although I was a little annoyed when the it ended and left the story plot wide open.  I am guessing there will be a sequel in the future...?

I am finally starting to get to know some people who live in my building.  Last week we met the boys who live next door and the other night, I hung out with them and watched a movie and played outside and just talked :) We are slowly making new friends.

Okay. Time for a funny story.  I work with this really odd guy.  He just has the weirdest ideas.  He was telling me about this one government conspiracy.  So apparently, the government and Apple have joined forces and are aiming to take over the world.  They are designing the ipods so that as many people will buy them as possible.  And once enough people have bought them, the government will tell Apple to flip a switch or something that will send an electric current through the ipod and headphones into the users brain.  Then they will have control over the entire population.  I know, crazy, right?  And the funny thing is that he was dead serious.

But, It's My Dream!

Dreams, goals and aspirations; they all are a governing force in our lives.  They are points we wish to reach in our life time.  They are destinations we want to end up at.  Without dreams, life can be quite dull.  How we act and the decisions we make are ultimately determined by our dreams.  We desperately want to reach our goals and actualize our dreams, so we are willing to make the necessary.  For example, an aspiring college student is going to put forth the time and effort to be involved and get good grades in high school in order to be accepted into their dream college.

Lately, I have been thinking about what my dreams and what exactly I want to achieve in life and making my own bucket list.  Here are just a few of my dreams.

★ graduate college ***in progress***
★ temple marriage
★ write a song
★ adopt
★ live in NYC
★ meet Taylor Swift
★ learn to play the guitar ***in progress***
★ see the northern lights
★ find a 4-leaf clover
★ catch fireflies
★ help baby sea turtles make it to the ocean
★ go on a humanitarian trip to a foreign country

Dreams are what keep us going in life.  Without them, what would we have to look forward to?  What would be purpose of living?  My dreams keep me going during the rough patches and help me stay focused on what I really want.

And I just have to include this video clip.  One, because it has to do with dreams. And two, it stars the one and only, Taylor Swift!

Dear Blank

These are so funny.  Thought I would share with you all.  Enjoy! :)

Dear Anne Frank,
     They read mine too!
        Sincerely, wimpy kid.

Dear National Association of Procrastinators,
     That is quite the acronym.
Sincerely, I think I'll join you.

Dear Dunkin' Donuts,
Having a slogan like "American runs on Dunkin'" isn't helping our image.
       Sincerely, America.

Dear childhood pop songs,
When I listen to you now, I realize how many of the lyrics I didn't understand back then.
Sincerely, can't believe 8-year-old me sang along to that.

Dear Lady GaGa,
Do you have you on your iPod?
       Sincerely, curious.

Dear calculus,
Cee Lo Green called, he said "forget you."
       Sincerely, ruined GPA.

Dear mom,
If you are always saying "You shouldn't care what other people think about you," why do you obsessively clean the house every time we have guests?
       Sincerely, your child.

Dear companies who fire their employees for things posted on their Facebook pages,
     Stop creepin'!
       Sincerely, annoyed.

Dear cake in the fridge labeled "Do not eat me!",
Don't tell me what to do!
       Sincerely, loved every bite.

Dear America,
     Tomorrow was awesome!
       Sincerely, Australia.

Dear favorite song,
How is it you never get stuck in my head, but the annoying songs repeat over and over?
       Sincerely, "It's Friday, Friday..."

Dear McDonalds,
If bars aren't allowed to serve drunk people, surely you shouldn't be allowed to serve fat people.
       Sincerely, makes sense to me.

Dear sneeze,
Please come out of my nose already.
Sincerely, my about-to-sneeze face looks weird.

Dear America,
Please stop assuming that the temperature automatically drops 30 degrees when you cross the border.
       Sincerely, Canada.

Dear sheep,
Why don't you shrink when it rains?
       Sincerely, cotton.

Dear world,
I dream of a world where we can cross the road without having our motives questioned.
       Sincerely, chickens.

Dear Taylor Swift,
     We like your ending better.
       Sincerely, Romeo and Juliet.

Dear "my dog ate my homework,"
     You've been replaced.
      Sincerely, "my printer broke."

Dear future self,
I apologize in advance for all the work.
       Sincerely, procrastinator.

Dear kids trying to grow up too fast,
Yeah, being older that you is awesome.  I love working to pay for my car, gas, college, books and having no money for fun stuff like eating or laundry.
Sincerely, seriously, just enjoy your childhood while you still can.

Dear full closet,
How come I have nothing to wear?!
       Sincerely, girls everywhere.

Dear boy,
Please note that you are about to be Facebook stalked for approval.
Sincerely, your new girlfriend's best friend.

The ABC Guide to Surving USU

A-Always wear a coat!  Coats are a must for the Logan sub-arctic temperatures.  This is global warming at its best!
B-Basketball at the spectrum.  You will just have to experience yourself.
C-Classes.  Just go.  It will (usually) be worth it in the end.
D-Dating.  Before you know it, everyone will be engaged.
E-Exercise.  Don't forget to stay fit.  And you can always check out the eye candy while you're at the gym!
F-Fluffy white stuff.  Don't be surprised when it is April and the grass is white instead of green.
G-Graduation.  Time flies by faster than you think.  I can't believe how fast it has gone.
H-Homesickness.  It's a very common disease, and everyone gets it at one time or another.
I-Ice Cream.  Okay, three words: Aggie Ice Cream.  Get some!
J-Journal.  Write everything down somewhere.
K-Keys.  You will realize the importance of checking to make sure you have keys BEFORE  you leave after you get locked out once or twice.
L-Library.  The library is actually a cool place to be, believe it or not.  It's a great place to sleep, catch up with friends, eat, or maybe even get some studying done!
M-Marketplace Food Poisoning.  It really does exist.  Just letting you know.
N-Needle.  I helps to be able to use a needle and thread.  It takes too long to wait for your mom to sew things for you.
O-Old Main Hill.  You have to go down that hill on something.  At least once.  There are multiple options: sleds, mattresses, shopping carts, longboards, pretty much anything!
P-PDA.  Expect to see some things you wished you hadn't.
Q-Quarters.  Every penny, nickel, and quarter is important.  And so are dimes!  Spend money wisely.
R-Roommates are pretty much the best!  Take the time to get to know them.
S-Sleep.  Just say your good-byes now.
T-True Aggie.  Got some chapstick?  It's always best to be prepared.
U-Undergraduate Research...  If I had a quarter for every time I heard that phrase I would be one rich girl!
V-Variety.  There is definitely no lack in variety among individuals.  If you want to meet a lot of different people then you will.
W-Walmart Runs.  Always better after dark.  Go between 11 pm and 1 am for the most enjoyment.
X-X-Boyfriends/Girlfriends.  Just know that the most awkward of awkward run-ins with your ex will occur when you least expect it.
Y-Young.  Have fun while you're young!  Before you get old and boring...
Z-Zombies.  Once a semester the Zombies come out to play.  People chasing each other with nerf guns is the norm.
